Elephant Haven Thailand

Big change! No elephant riding, no performing in shows. Only ethical elephant-friendly activities! Elephant Haven is located in Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi, in the south-west of Thailand. The team from Elephant Nature Park worked in cooperation with Sai Yok Elephant Park, an elephant trekking camp in Kanchanaburi, to help with the transition to the ‘Saddle Off’ model. The time to take the saddles off of the elephants and provide them with a haven has arrived. Now the herd at Elephant Haven enjoys roaming together in nature while foraging, playing in the mud, and swimming in the river. The elephants have been rightfully retired from their labors, young and old, free of the saddle and giving performances. At Elephant Haven, guests can come to be with elephants in an environment of respect.

Earthwatch

Earthwatch currently supports more than 40 research projects globally that produce rigorous, relevant, and impactful science, address global change, and actively involve community participants.

The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center (TBZTEC) is a not-for-profit organization founded by Sharon Matola in 1983, who was caring for a handful of wild animals that had been part of a natural history documentary. When filming was completed, she was left with these animals and decided to start a zoo. Over forty years later, the “backyard zoo” has become a world-renowned wildlife education center where visitors connect with Belize’s unique natural heritage: the animals. In keeping with its origins, the animals here are rescued, confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade by law enforcement, or transferred from other rehab and zoological facilities. The habitats designed for the animals reflect natural settings, and provide an immersive educational experience for visitors.

Tobacco Caye Marine Station

Tobacco Caye is one of 450 sand and mangrove cayes located right on top of the Belize Barrier Reef. With this easy accessible marine environment as our classroom, students can explore the diverse biomes of coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves with our knowledgeable guide teams. Our educational field excursions around the South Water Caye Marine Reserve offer students the opportunity to snorkel in a variety of unique flora and fauna locations. We also take the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian Caribbean Research institute just a 15 minute boat ride away. Over the past four years we have developed research projects which students can get involved with at any age. From finding nurdles on the beach to dissecting and holding the invasive lionfish, we strive to provide interesting and meaningful experiences to inspire the next generation into science. For students looking to create a research project, we are happy to share our historical data on our research and collaborate.
